Most Commonly Asked Questions About Hair Transplant
Hair
transplants are done to add hair to an area of your scalp where the hair may be
thinning or balding. The procedure is mostly done by taking hair from thicker
parts of the head or any other parts of the body and graft that hair into a
balding or thinning section of the scalp.
The
first hair transplant surgery was done in Japan in 1939 with single scalp
hairs. "Plug" technique was developed later by the physicians. This
technique involved the transplant of large tufts of hair.
As
time passed and technology improved, the surgeons began to use micro and mini
grafting so they can minimize the appearance of transplanted hair on the
scalp.

Does a hair transplant surgery method is just for men?
Hair
loss problem can affect both women and men, but the FUE hair transplant
treatment is popular among men. Also, it is a method widely utilized for women
who are experiencing male pattern hair loss.
Is there any age limit for a hair transplant procedure?
Mostly
patients between the ages of 25 and 60 are considered as the most suitable for
hair transplant surgery. But as each individual is different so this does not
always have to be limited within this specific age. However, when the person is
slightly older, then it is he/she is more likely to achieve a successful hair
transplant. The hair growth and hair loss pattern can be irregular during a
younger age. So that is why it is not advisable to proceed for a hair
transplant surgery under the age of 25.
How much will the hair transplant cost?
- There are three apparent variants important here:
- Where you get the surgery done?
- Who performs the surgery?
- What is the size of the area you need to cover?
To
answer the first one, there are many cheap options like India, Thailand, and Turkey
if you travel abroad for surgery. But not all the cheap methods are safe, so
better choose a safe and suitable option that is also long-lasting as well.
Secondly, who is going to perform the surgery, well a reputable transplant
surgeon will charge more than usual and provide a better result. Their
reputation and longevity depend upon the technology and equipment used by them.
Do your research before visiting any hair transplant surgeon. And lastly, about
the treatment area well, if you are receding hairline or want to resolve a
thinning, then it will cost less than a more extensive procedure in which you
need the entire top sorted.
What
are the methods used for hair transplant?
There
are two methods used in the hair transplantation:
FUE
method, it does not leave any major scar and FUT method it may leave a linear
scar in the back part of your head.
FUE
(Follicular Unit Extraction) technique in which the hair follicles are taken
one by one and implanted into the area where it was needed. Whereas in the FUT
(Follicular Unit Transplant) method, from the back of the scalp, a skin band
containing hair is taken. The method is decided after scalp and hair analysis
by considering the priorities of the patient.
Does
it hurt during or after the hair transplant surgery?
Not
certainly, but there is an obvious discomfort in the surgical procedure, you
will feel a little sting when the sedative is given.
Most
of the patients experience no great pain or discomfort during the procedure or
after the procedure. The procedure takes several hours at that time; the
patients relax by watching the video, or some of them may fall asleep.
How
long will I need to rest after the surgery?
Most
of the patients only need to take rest for a couple of days when the surgery is
done. Just relax and allow yourself to recover easily. Do not overexert
yourself and avoid activities such as running, sexual activities, or leave the
gym for at least ten days.
Will
I lose more hair after the surgery is done in the area?
It
could be possible that you will lose some hair in the area of existing hair. It
is known as 'shock loss,' and this happens if your hair is weak. If the hair is
too weak, then there is a chance that it may not return, but the hair is
strong, it will remain.
Will
people notice the scarring after the hair transplant?
FUE
(Follicular unit extraction) technique in which grafting requires tiny
incisions on the area and if there is any scar, it will be invisible to the
naked eyes whereas FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant) technique results in a
linear scar on the donor area, the strip is removed from there.
Will
my hair look natural after the hair transplant?
In
the FUE method, they transplant only one to four hairs at a time. It allows
attention to be paid at the angle and direction at which it is transplanted
rather than just the location of the hair, and each hair is to be placed
strategically that will create a more natural look.
Does
a beard transplant is different than a hair transplant?
It
is almost similar to a regular hair transplant experience. The procedure time,
the healing process, and the discomfort is comparable.
Can
a hair transplant fail after a successful surgery?
It
is a common concern many people worried about what if they lose hair again, and
even their hair transplant surgery went successful. Let us tell you that it
happened incredibly rare.
What
medical defect can cause hair loss at hair transplant sites?
In
exceptional situations, a medical condition that can damage follicles and cause
hair loss, e.g., Lichen planopilaris can cause hair loss to return, a diffuse
form of Alopecia Areata can cause hair loss to recur.
Do I need
more than single hair transplant surgery?
Usually, a
single hair transplant is enough for most of the patients unless their bald
area is broad. If people are heavily bald, then we don't recommend them to have
hair transplant surgery as there will not be sufficient hair to cover bald
spots.
Will a hair
transplant surgery help me to grow new hair?
Well,
sadly, that's not possible. In hair transplant surgery, there is redistributing
hair around the scalp. Where the surgeon extracts the hair from the back of the
scalp and places it on the bald spots or where there is less hair. The beauty
of a hair transplant is that any hair replanted in balding areas will stay there
for the rest of their life.
Will
everyone can notice my hair transplant surgery?
There will
be redness and swelling in the surgical area, and that is quite noticeable. The
patient may require a minimum of 2 – 3 weeks to heal. To hide them they can
wear a suitable hat or cap. After 15-20 days, it will look normal and
healed.
How much
time will a hair transplant surgery take?
Well, the
time depends upon the amount of hair loss, but usually, it can be completed
within a few hours. The average time of the procedure is around 5- 8 hours. But
if the balding area is broad, then it might take more than one session to
complete it.
